LGB
With the set came of course LGB track, very good
quality and being top priced one does expect that, also it is
manufactured on Germany. I find the points need a little fine tuning to
get good running though.
The price of the track being a little high (NZ13
per 300mm) I sourced other suppliers of cheaper track,
Aristo-Craft
made in China, but also nearly as good as LGB
was purchased from Don Ellis in Christchurch, it is $NZ9 per 300mm and
the points, though also needing attention cost about half the LGB price.
The track has one very good point in that it has a small screw in the
rail joiner which ensures good electrical contact, bit fiddley to do up
though... bit of blue tack on the screw driver helps.
It retains a brighter yellow colour after weathering than LGB, which goes
a dirty brown colour...
NZ made Track
This is available from Cliff
Smith in Christchurch It comes in 5ft lengths and looks very
similar to Aristo-Craft. It is only $35 per length. I found it was easy
to bend to the required radius and although some of the sleepers were a
bit loose, once the ballast was round them this was no problem.
Points and turnouts.
For amazing quality that beats any others, I get my points from Ian
Barker of Christchurch, fax or phone him on 03 332 4067. At $80 for large
radius turnouts and $150 for 3 way turnouts, all hand made and solid brass
frogs, sturdy good looking, the best..

Of course gradients have to be taken into account.. so cuttings and
embankments have to be constructed....
technical details!!
As long as the bubble on the 30cm level does not cross the |O|
lines by more than three quarters of its length I find the trains can make
it. If they can't... then you will need a banker or double head them from
the journey's start.. and don't forget to put it in the Sectional
Appendix.. and make sure the driver and guard read it!
